Liz--I was wondering when your MA commencement ceremony is? Mine is Friday, May 5th, at 7:00 p.m, if anyone wants to come (don't feel like you have to though--I'm sure it will be terribly boring). Nara--you are not graduating this semester, right?

So I was approved for funding to study in Egypt this summer. That means I get to spy on Nara's lover!
I'm excited, but the tragic part is that I'll have to miss your wedding Liz and Doug! I'm so sad about this. Think you could hook up a webcam?
:-) If not, please promise you will video tape every second! (oh-and don't have Andrew do the taping unless you just want to see the back of Doug's head the whole ceremony...have you seen our "wonderful" wedding tape?)

I don't think I'm going to my graduation! It's on May 6 in the morningish I believe, but since I don't get my final Ed.S. degree until next year, I don't care as much about the masters. Who knows? Maybe I'll come home and go to yours instead!

Congratulations on your trip to Egypt! Of course you will be missing out on some serious wedding fun. We'll try to video as much as possible, especially on the off chance that we catch some good footage of any feather collecting guests...

I don't really care about mine either, especially since I've decided to continue on for the PhD at MSU.

So you're staying in E. Lansing, eh? Will you be able to continue teaching?

I'm doing internship interviews all week this week in Colorado/Wyoming (sigh). 2 down, 5 more to go!

good luck with your interviews! How have they been so far?

yeah, I'm planning to do the PhD in Second Language Studies at MSU. U of M ending up NOT accepting me after totally buttering me up during the recruitment weekend!! I was shocked, especially since my interviews went so well, but it sounded like they had really limited funding this year and I suspect that even though there was one prof that really wanted me, maybe there wasn't enough support from the rest of the faculty. The department is not exactly known for being interested in language pedagogy. They prefer that you are studying some obscure person in the 6th century! Anyway, the professor that was rooting for me (the Palestinian prof I mentioned in a previous blog) still wants to do some projects with me and there are still some courses there that I would like to take, so I'm applying through the Committee of Institutional Cooperation to take 2 or 3 courses at U of Mich as a traveling scholar student. I think this will actually work out better since in some ways what I really wanted all along was a combination of the two programs!

I'm guaranteed some kind of funding at MSU, but not sure if it will be teaching or what. Actually I haven't been teaching this past year--I've been working on an Arabic multimedia program for language learning. I would rather continue working on that than teach, so we'll see. Actually, MSU might be getting a huge government grant to partner with an initiative to start teaching Arabic in some k-12 schools in Michigan. If we the grant, then I would get to get play a big role in that--maybe doing things like developing curriculum or planning summer trips to Egypt, etc. That would be really fun!!

What, have you no interest in graduation ceremonies or language pedagogies????

And I may indeed be coming home that weekend to do some wedding stuff, etc. In fact, most of May will probably be spent in MI.

is anyone officially throwing you a wedding shower? I will be around with a pretty free schedule for most of May if you want to have one then. Would also love to help you with any other wedding activities.

ah yes, shower. I believe doug's mom and aunt are throwing a pampered chef shower for me sometime in may. Other than that, I don't have too many plans. Shall I give you a list of dates that would work?

Also, i believe kristy is planning a little bachelorette party on the thursday before the wedding, to which all female cousin council members are invited (except you, denise).
